Our Process
Our process always starts with long deliberation and careful planning to bring a thought out and original design. When any new design or cut gets thought up, we also meticulously ponder on what fabrics, prints or dye we want to use for it.
First is to print our fabric. We get all of our fabric undyed and made from natural materials. We hand print all of our yardage doing repeat patterns with silkscreens, which requires constant readjusting of fabric, realigning of the graphics, and running around every side of the table! Printing repeat patterns by hand will always have its inconsistencies and variables, however we believe this makes our textiles more interesting.
Next comes cutting and sewing. Depending on the garment, the sewing stage can be a lengthy process, requiring multiple specialized machines each designed for a specific part of construction.
Last is garment finishing, which is by far the most dramatic and exciting part of making our process. Even with us deciding on what dyes to use from the get go, the final result isn’t always how we planned. We only use natural dyes and while we do use calculated ratios and formulas, the end result can vary from what we envisioned. Some of our consistent dyes are turmeric, indigo, fermented persimmon extract (kakishibu), acorns, and black tea. We use different blends and layers of dyes as well as mordants (color binders and modifiers) to add variations of new colors, keeping this part fun and exciting! The dye always makes the garment feel finished.
